Aadhaar Updates Free for Children

On 29-9-2025, the Unique Identification Authority of India (‘UIDAI’) announced the Waiver of charges for Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) – 1 of children aged 7 to 15 years. It is a significant step aimed at reducing biometric update pendency and improving access to Aadhaar-linked services for children, effective from 1-10-2025.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Children under the age of five are enrolled in Aadhaar using only demographic details and a photograph, as their biometric features are not fully developed. With this notification, UIDAI mandates biometric updates at two key stages:

    • MBU-I: At age 5 — fingerprints, iris scan, and updated photo.

    • MBU-II: At age 15 — refreshed biometric data.

  2. These updates are mandatory to maintain the accuracy of Aadhaar records.

  3. Previously, biometric updates were free only if completed between the ages of 5—7 and 15—17. Outside these windows, a fee of ₹125 was applicable. With the new waiver, children aged 7—15 can now update their Aadhaar biometrics free of cost.

  4. The initiative is projected to benefit nearly 6 crore children across India, helping them access services like:

    • School admissions

    • Entrance exam registrations

    • Scholarships

    • Direct Benefit Transfer (‘DBT’) schemes

  5. Parents and guardians are advised to prioritize updating their children’s Aadhaar biometrics during the waiver period. Updates can be done at:

  6. The waiver has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and is part of UIDAI’s mission-mode approach to ensure no child is left behind in India’s digital identity ecosystem.

  7. The waiver will remain in force for one year from 1-10-2025, allowing children in the specified age group to update their Aadhaar biometrics free of cost, even if they missed the original free update window.
